1. Overview

A leading AI lab is advancing the frontier of generative AI by training Large Language Models to reason rigorously across scientific domains. We're seeking talented Chemistry / Scientific Domain Experts to bring hands-on chemistry expertise and elevate the quality of our AI training and evaluation data.

This is a W-2 employment position with Cincinnatus LLC, requiring full-time onsite commitment in San Francisco for the 6-month engagement (40 hours per week, weekdays). This position will be placed at a leading AI Lab as part of their extended workforce.

2. Key Responsibilities

  • Design chemistry-focused tasks and model evaluation workflows that test scientific reasoning.

  • Translate chemistry expertise into clear instructions, rubrics, grading criteria, and review processes.

  • Read and synthesize scientific papers and technical materials.

  • Evaluate model-generated outputs for scientific correctness, rigor, and usefulness; provide clear written technical feedback.

  • Partner with research and engineering teams to improve data quality, evaluation design, and iteration loops.

  • Collaborate with other subject matter experts to ensure consistency and accuracy in training data.

3. Core Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent research experience in chemistry (or a closely adjacent field such as chemical biology, materials chemistry, or computational chemistry).

  • Strong scientific reasoning and the ability to assess correctness and rigor of chemistry-related claims, papers, and model outputs.

  • Hands-on technical fluency with datasets, notebooks, Python, LLMs, and scientific software; able to move fluidly between scientific concepts and computational workflows.

  • Ability to commit to 40 hours per week, fully onsite in San Francisco, for the duration of the 6-month engagement.

  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to explain scientific decisions and methodological choices clearly.

  • Bonus: experience in computational chemistry, cheminformatics, molecular modeling, or adjacent chemistry-focused computational research.

  • Bonus: prior Mercor annotation / evaluation experience (2+ projects).
