Description

Domain Expert – Legal (Lexis+ Research)

To qualify you must use Lexis+ regularly - weekly or more - as a working part of your job, with 2+ years of professional legal experience.

Lexis+ knowledge we require

Citators / good law

  • Shepard's Citations Service: Shepard's Signal indicators (red stop sign, orange "Q" questioned, yellow caution, green positive treatment, blue "I" citing references), Depth of Discussion indicators, citing references, overruling risk (Westlaw: KeyCite)

  • Distinguishing overruled, superseded, depublished, and distinguished-on-facts authority

Searching & finding

  • Terms-and-connectors (Boolean) vs. natural-language search; segment searching

  • Lexis Headnotes, Case Summaries, and Case Notes (annotated statute equivalent to Notes of Decisions)

  • Lexis+ with Protégé - litigation issue filters, Shepard's Graphical (visual case history)

  • Protégé natural-language / AI-assisted search

Secondary sources

  • Treatises (Matthew Bender), ALR, Am. Jur., practice guides, Practical Guidance (Lexis Practice Advisor), 50-state surveys

Statutes & regulations

  • Annotated statutes/regs; version comparison; historical and effective-date versions; currentness

  • The version of the law in force on a given operative date

Analytics & records

  • Litigation Analytics (Lex Machina); Brief Analysis; dockets / CourtLink / PACER

What you'll do

  • Confirm every case, statute, and regulation is still good law for the point cited; catch negative Shepard's treatment

  • Catch non-existent or misdescribed cases; verify quotes, holdings, and pin cites

  • Judge completeness: is controlling authority found; are on-point cases missed; are 50-state / multi-jurisdiction splits kept distinct

  • Verify currency: the version of the law in force on the operative date

  • Distinguish binding vs. persuasive authority; require verify-before-finalize

Requirements

  • Frequent Lexis+ use - weekly or more - for substantive legal research in your current or recent role

  • 2+ years of professional legal-research experience

  • Reflexive Shepard's / KeyCite use; can spot a bad cite, misstated holding, or superseded statute on sight

  • J.D. and bar admission, MLIS / law librarian, or equivalent research-heavy experience
